Nick Redfern’s Monster Files: Book Review

Review by Mark Turner
6/26/2013

Author Nick Redfern exposes monsters and government secrets

For Your Eyes Only - Dossier of Fantastic Beasts

Why would any government care about the Abominable Snowman, the Loch Ness Monster, or any far-out camp-fire stories?  And yet they do, and with alarming consistency. Blowing the lid off of accepted strange creature lore, prolific author Nick Redfern does not settle for stale explanations, instead in Monster Files, he delivers at every turn, a compelling view of possible government involvement of a clandestine nature. Monster Files is just what the name suggests; a probing of government secrets, freedom of information act documents, first-hand accounts, investigations of tall-tales and dogged research. The result is a fascinating blend of paranormal and conspiracy.

Following a general timeline of monstrous events, the book starts off with Teddy Roosevelt’s Bigfoot story and ends with modern day beasts.

Not every creature is necessarily the target of government interest; some monsters are presented to serve as an introduction to the next tale of official involvement. Yet, it is not so easy to lump each case into narrow classifications. Some monsters are ‘used’ by governments as clever misdirection, a ‘wild-goose-chase’ to hide top secret projects and advanced weaponry. At other times, these same agencies have a curious interest in all things paranormal. At times, they seem fascinated or even frightened as with the case of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Ocean Service (NOA) both protesting loudly that Mermaids do not exist!

At other times, the government has technological interests, as with vanishing beasts of the werewolf and Bigfoot variety, where multi-dimensional super technologies could be used for our governments own nefarious purposes.

In Monster Files, Nick Redfern shows that he is an author and researcher who is willing to offer original conclusions and concepts to what might otherwise be familiar lore. His explanation for the origins of the somewhat famous, or infamous, Flatwoods monster sighting of 1952, in the small town of Flatwoods West Virginia is original and more than a little thought provoking.
The files of oddities are frequent and varied in form.

Government research into the psychic abilities of cats and dogs to spot for hidden mines? It’s true! That research also showed that cats and dogs transfer ESP information between one another.

FDR green-lighting a project to use bats as living-bombs? Yes! It’s here too!

Monster Army and Ape-Human Hybrids

A book about monsters would not be complete without the scientific Dr. Frankenstein creations, real or rumored. Redfern explores the tale of Russian physiologist Ilya Ivanov, who was hired, allegedly by none other than Joseph Stalin to create an army out of a race of genetically spliced half human/half ape men in late 1920’s. The book is good at digging for the truth behind such wild claims and its author is not one to simply accept such stories at face value. There is something here for skeptics’ and believers’ alike. Redfern covers all of the bases.

And concerning the reality of the Russian ape-men?

“What we have here then, is a saga that has some truth to it, that describes very real attempts to create human-ape hybrids that were undertaken by the Soviet Union’s scientific elite, that were funded by the Soviet Academy of science, and that did have the support of the Bolshevik government.”
(Reprinted, with permission of the publisher, from MONSTER FILES © 2013 Nick Redfern. Published by New Page Books a division of Career Press, Pompton Plains, NJ. 800-227-3371. All rights reserved.)

Stalin’s involvement, however, as the author points out, remains to be see.

There are other ape-people here too, those of the long-lost-cousin variety, and a few stories of possible Neanderthal’s show up for a visit.

The best is the last one in chapter 3, (again from the U.S.S.R.) recounting the story of a Lt. Col.  Karapetyan in the Soviet Army’s Medial Service in World War II.  A strange looking man had been captured; who the Soviet’s initially thought was a spy. Covered in a long brown coat of shaggy hair, six-feet tall with powerful arms, the beast had to be kept in a cold room because it could not bear heat.

The possibility of what any of these ape-people could have been makes any future trip to my local zoo’s ape exhibit, a disturbing one.

Indian Jones: Monster Hunter

Adventurer Tom Slick, the possible real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones is profiled in his possible involvement as a spy for the CIA. Slick studied at Harvard and MIT, served in the Navy during the Pacific engagement of WWII and was also instrumental in three groups that later became the Texas Bio-medical Research Institute and the Southwest Research institute. For all intense of purposes, Slik was a man who had solid connections to important people. He was also a globetrotting adventurer who had a very real passion for mystery beasts like the famed Yeti, A.K.A. the Abominable Snowman.

The real reason, as some have theorized, for Tom Slick’s 1956 trek to Tibet wasn't just to search for the Yeti but also to use the expedition as a cover story for a secret CIA mission to spy on the encroaching communist Chinese government that was attempting to takeover Tibet. The evidence that is presented in Monster Files certainly lends credibility to Slick's clandestine role. Redfern presents a document from the US State Department from 1959 titled: Regulations Covering Mountain Climbing Expeditions in Nepal – relating to Yeti.

And it doesn't end there. That chapter continues to link the loose threads of the JFK assassination, Bigfoot, and the budding career of none other than George H. W. Bush (AKA Bush 41) and ties them all together neatly into one tight bundle!

The real scare comes at the end of that chapter with the mysterious death of Tom Slick on October 6th of 1962. Returning from a hunting trip while flying over Montana, Slick's plane seems to have disintegrated in flight. As you can imagine, the sinister notes of a conspiracy can be heard. Did the CIA monster hunter know one-too-many secrets, secrets that doomed him to an early grave?

Locking Down the Mysteries of the Loch?

Our friend Nessie, the great Loch Ness Monster is visited and re-visited numerous times and for different reasons throughout the book. The good thing is that this never gets old. You still have so many questions. Sure, Nessie could be a ruse by the British government to hide sophisticated weapons, argues Monster Files, but then, that does not explain the sightings that date back before submarines were invented, as the author also notes.

And then there’s British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s interest in protecting Nessie for Scottish tourism!

The hot idea for me in Monster Files, was how could there be so many sighting of a large creature that could not possibly survive with such a scant food supply provided by the Loch? The possibility that Nessie could in fact be the ghost of an extinct dinosaur, is a mind-blowing concept.

Bigfoot: What the U.S. Government Doesn't Want You to Know

Mount Saint Helens erupted with terrible violent force in May of 1980. Once all of the volcanic ash had settled, there were rumors and scattered reports that several beasts resembling Sasquatch were whisked away by the US Army Corps of Engineers’. Chapter 18 holds more surprises too, but the reason for any government involvement can only be speculated. The book points to the idea that these beasts, Bigfoot, have some sort of special ability that the military is studying.

There’s a chapter here too on UFO’s and Bigfoot. The possibility that these creatures can jump into other dimensions and that they have psychic abilities are the possible reasons given for government/military involvement.

Monster Mash-Up

There are many stories that haunt and fascinate and the brief tale of the US Government trying to hot-wire a common house-cat to work as a spy, was for me, a show-stopper. It is just one of many that make this book a must have. The case of the dissected Bigfoot, Princess Di and the large black killer cat, the WWII werewolf; it’s all page turning stuff! There are so many good tales here highlighting any one story does a disservice to the other weird tales. Nick Redfern’s Monster Files delivers mysteries, monsters, conspiracies and excitement. It’s a book to read and read again.

Archaeologists Discover “Lost City” in Cambodian Jungle (VIDEO)

June 17, 2013

For more than a millennium, its temples, canals, roads and statues remained buried under dense jungle undergrowth in the mountainous Phnom Kulen region of northwestern Cambodia. Now, a team led by archaeologist Damien Evans of Sydney University has used the airborne light-scanning technology known as Lidar to unearth the ancient city of Mahendraparvata, thought to be around 1,200 years old. Part of the Hindu-Buddhist Khmer Empire that ruled much of Southeast Asia from about A.D. 800 to 1400, the city lies some 25 miles west of the famous 12th-century Hindu temple complex of Angkor Wat, and appears to predate it by some 350 years.

Search Is On for 17th Century Ship Wreck in Lake Michigan

John Flesher
06/15/13

ON LAKE MICHIGAN NEAR POVERTY ISLAND, Mich. — Divers began opening an underwater pit Saturday at a remote site in northern Lake Michigan that they say could be the resting place of the Griffin, a ship commanded by the 17th century French explorer La Salle.

U.S. and French archaeologists examined sediment removed from a hole dug near a timber slab that expedition leader Steve Libert discovered wedged in the lakebed in 2001. They found a 15-inch slab of blackened wood that might have been a human-fashioned "cultural artifact," although more analysis will be required to determine whether it was part of a vessel, project manager Ken Vrana said.

Uri Geller Documentary Claims That Spoonbending Psychic Was CIA Spy

Uri Geller rose to fame in the 1970s by staring at spoons and apparently bending them with his psychic powers.

But while he was wowing TV audiences, did he have an even more amazing career -- working as a spy for the CIA and Mossad?

A new British documentary, "The Secret Life Of Uri Geller –- Psychic Spy?," contends that Geller was recruited to work with U.S. intelligence agencies to help in a “psychic arms race” with the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War.

“When Jimmy Carter was elected President, one of the first things he did was to have Uri Geller give him a four hour briefing on the Soviet psychic threat. America didn’t want a psychic gap and Uri was the go-to guy about these things,” filmmaker Vikram Jayanti told the Independent.

New lightweight lift cable will let buildings soar ever upward

June 15th 2013
The Economist

WHEN Elisha Otis stood on a platform at the 1854 World Fair in New York and ordered an axeman to cut the rope used to hoist him aloft, he changed cityscapes for ever. To the amazement of the crowd his new safety lift dropped only a few inches before being held by an automatic braking system. This gave people the confidence to use what Americans insist on calling elevators. That confidence allowed buildings to rise higher and higher.

They could soon go higher still, as a result of another breakthrough in lift technology. This week Kone, a Finnish liftmaker, announced that after a decade of development at its laboratory in Lohja, which sits above a 333-metre-deep mineshaft which the firm uses as a test bed, it has devised a system that should be able to raise an elevator a kilometre (3,300 feet) or more. This is twice as far as the things can go at present. Since the effectiveness of lifts is one of the main constraints on the height of buildings, Kone’s technology—which replaces the steel cables from which lift cars are currently suspended with ones made of carbon fibres—could result in buildings truly worthy of the name “skyscraper”.

On June 10th, a story from Pakistan says that eight cows have died in different areas in the province of Sargodha. A mysterious disease that has killed cows, goats, sheep and buffalo.

Though the details are sketchy, one is left to wonder if this is a case of Mad Cow disease which infects grazer animals?

The local population is upset and claim that no measures are being made by authorities to keep the situation under control. They demand vaccination, but of what type of inoculation would be required is not indicated. The animals are the only source of income for the local inhabitants.

A hardened ghost hunter fled from a haunted Fife tower in terror after hearing ghostly voices.

Gregor Stewart, who is a self-described “open-minded sceptic”, found a research trip to the Tolbooth Tower in Pittenweem too strange for comfort.

Investigating the tower along with his son Kyle, 17, the pair had lasted around three hours but were suddenly so spooked that they left the building as soon as they could.

Gregor, an author of two books about haunted locations, had set up a digital recorder during their time in the tower and when it was played back there was a voice around the time the two began to feel unwell, which neither Gregor nor his son heard at the time.

Mysterious 60,000 Ton Monument Found Beneath The Sea Of Galilee

June 10th 2013
Science 2.0

The Sea of Galilee, located in the North of Israel, has numerous significant archaeological sites and an ancient structure underneath the waves adds to its mysteries.

The cone-shaped monument, approximately 230 feet in diameter, 39 feet high, and weighing an estimated 60,000 tons, was found while conducting a geophysical survey on the southern Sea of Galilee, reports Prof. Shmulik Marco of TAU's Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences.

Initial findings indicate that the structure was built on dry land approximately 6,000 years ago, and later submerged under the water. Marco calls it an impressive feat, noting that the stones, which comprise the structure, were probably brought from more than a mile away and arranged according to a specific construction plan.

Dr. Yitzhak Paz of the Antiquities Authority and Ben-Gurion University says that the site resembles early burial sites in Europe and was likely built in the early Bronze Age. He believes that there may be a connection to the nearby ancient city of Beit Yerah, the largest and most fortified city in the area.

Legend of New York's Cayuga Lake Monster

Tamara Lindstrom
YNN Syracuse

CAYUGA LAKE -- The cool waters of Cayuga Lake have long invited boaters, swimmers and even divers into its shadowy depths.

"I would daresay I've spent more time underwater than any other human being in this area, in Cayuga Lake anyhow," said Jack Marshall, owner of Jack Marshall Professional Diving Service.

For more than 40 years, Marshall has trained aspiring divers, and even explored his underwater hometown history.

"People will research and find out where the old hotels were and they'd go out front and dump their garbage," Marshall said. "And people would find old bottles, neat things like that."

But beneath the surface lies much more than antique treasures.

At 38 miles long and more than 400 feet deep, the bottom of Cayuga Lake dips below sea level. And some say there's no telling what lives in the murky darkness.

"Of course the lake is very deep," Marshall said. "Not quite as deep as Loch Ness, but you know people have never been down there to see what's there. So who knows?"

"I've experienced on dead calm days, when there's not a ripple in the water anywhere. And we're sitting there with our engines off, pulling water samples and plankton samples out of the lake. Not a boat in sight," said Dennis Montgomery, cofounder of the Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom. "And all of a sudden, you look out in the lake and you see this big, soft ripply wave coming toward you, coming from the shore. Okay, so what causes that?"

A question asked by residents and so-called "cottagers" for more than two centuries.

"It goes all the way back, the first stories that I read about were from the 1800s."

An article printed on January 5th, 1897 in the Ithaca Daily Journal hails the 69th annual appearance of an elusive green sea monster.

The article claims a reputable citizen was taking a drive with a companion along the lake's shore, when he spotted what he said was "certainly the sea serpent" with a large head and long body that disappeared beneath the whitecaps.

And by this time, the creature had a name – Old Greeny.

It's the kind of story Jack Marshall would chalk up to a vivid imagination.

"I'm not a believer in that kind of stuff," Marshall said.

That is, until one day in 1979, when Marshall took some friends out on the lake in his new boat.

"And in front of the boat, I saw what appeared to be a log. I saw where it came up to the surface and part of it went down and back up again. And another fellow was driving the boat, and I told him to stop, quick, quick, stop!"

But it was too late. Expecting an impact that would wreck the motor, the boaters instead saw the water around the object churn, and the 20-foot hazard disappeared.

Today the human brain is three times the size of our primate ancestors. As our brains grew so did our heads get bigger, our skulls expanded and our features became flatter.

Now with the advent of wearable technology, such as Google Glass, how will our heads and faces evolve in 20,000 years, 60,000 years and even 100,000 years from now?

Invisibility 'time cloak' developed

optical camouflage, keio university

Melissa Hogenboom
BBC News

An "invisibility" time cloak which is able to hide events in a continuous stream of light has been developed by scientists.

The cloak works by manipulating the speed of light in optical fibres and means any interaction which takes place during this "hole in time" is not detected.

That is, a beam of light can be manipulated along its path.

The study is published in the journal Nature.

The research builds upon a time cloak described last year that was only able to hide single brief events of time in an optical beam.

Hidden data

This work is different to other "invisibility cloaks" in that it hides events in time, rather than spatial objects - which similar efforts have looked into.

The team from the Purdue University in Indiana has shown it can hide events in the path of a continuous light beam by having several "holes in time".

The researchers were able to cloak nearly half the data put in the beam's path, which they would otherwise be able to detect.

Cloaking, just as it sounds, is where an object or event is hidden from vision. This can apply to frequencies of light or sound. For example, stealth war planes can be difficult to detect on enemy radar.

"We were able to push the light forward and back using commercial telecoms components, that are controlled by electrical signals," said Andrew Weiner, who co-authored the paper.

"When one sends high-speed data over an optical fibre in the existing infrastructure, in many cases it's just 1s and 0s (binary code).

Bendy light

"In our system, we can hide the 1s and 0s. There can also be other kinds of disturbances in the light but this cloak provides a zone where one doesn't see how the light is being changed," Prof Weiner told BBC News.

West Michigan author claims to crack mystery of Flight 2501

Michigan Live

SOUTH HAVEN, MI – Valerie van Heest believes she has unraveled the 63-year-old mystery of Northwest Airlines Flight 2501. However, the location of the aircraft remains unknown.

NWA Flight 2501 was considered the worst aviation crash of its time and as one of the greatest tragedies of the Great Lakes. All 58 people aboard the flight on June 23, 1950 were lost when the plane went down over Lake Michigan. Aircraft debris and other evidence were found along the Lake Michigan shore near South Haven in the days following the accident.

Over the years, searchers have attempted to locate the plane at the bottom of the lake, to no avail. But van Heest, director of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association, said families of victims need not wait to learn what happened that night when 34-year-old Capt. Robert Lind decided to fly the plane into a dangerous storm that other pilots avoided.

Van Heest is the author a non-fiction book called "Fatal Crossing: The Mysterious Disappearance of NWA Flight 2501 and The Quest for Answers," that will be released this month by Holland-based publisher In Depth Editions.

Using 10 years of research, she recreates the last hours of the flight and connects a series of bad decisions and unfortunate events leading to the crash.
